Established in 1954, Reeves Regional Health Trauma Center was founded to provide a convenient and critical option for the communities of West Texas. However, over time, the aging hospital became worn down and was in need of a major renovation. Therefore, this project represents the district's investment in completely replacing the community's hospital. The new hospital includes 25 all-private inpatient beds, a level four emergency department with at least eight exam rooms, three trauma rooms, a delivery suite, a nursery, a women's imaging department, a physical therapy gym, a 15-bay dialysis unit, surgical services space, an inpatient/outpatient lab, a cardiovascular rehabilitation program, and support service spaces.
The region of West Texas is known for its expansive desert landscapes, towering mountains forested with tall pine and aspen, and the clearest night skies in North America. Therefore, from the very beginning, harmonizing the exterior materials with the natural surroundings of West Texas was the basis of the overall exterior design concept.
By focusing on the qualities of West Texas and the Davis Mountains, the project's facade creates a sense of wonder and curiosity with its rigid concrete panels floating gracefully above the field of glazing below. The pattern of the concrete panels were intentionally placed to mimic the atmospheric sight of mountains in the distant West Texas landscape. This concept helped the exterior design achieve a simple yet sophisticated presence in the desert.
