Designed for the annual Botanical Gardens AIA-sponsored Storybook competition in San Antonio, Tx, the Larva was intended to capture the imagination of both children and adults through the use of color in physical form. After several internal design reviews and discussions, the design staff at Overland Partners in San Antonio selected three projects to submit for the competition in 2015.
To make it stand out among the other design entries, Larva was submitted as a children's book along with a physical model. The book was hand-bound and printed on soft cardstock, giving it an elegant touch. It also featured unique cutouts in the pages, allowing for a unique interactive experience while flipping through the book.
Unfortunately, the Larva was only shortlisted by the competition judges and did not get built. Nonetheless, the design and theory behind it, which aimed to engage emotions through the use of color in the built form, was a wonderful design exercise.
Excerpt from the "Larva Storybook" used in the submission of the Larva.
"Unlock your imagination
In a space of color
Through metamorphosis of a translucent cocoon
A moment of conception within the inner structure
A beautiful butterfly nears its first engagement of a new world".
Gabriel Winter contributed to the design and packaging of Larva.
Unbuilt.
