Halo: A Harmonious Fusion of Art and Architecture

At the heart of Baylor Scott & White Irving Medical Center’s architecturally striking entry lobby, the artwork Halo, created by Gabriel Winter, commands attention with its elegant balance and dynamic presence. Designed as part of The Renaissance Project, Halo engages with the lobby’s geometric patterns and spatial rhythms, creating a captivating tension that enhances the architectural experience. Gabriel’s intimate involvement in the lobby’s design granted him unique insight into its spatial dynamics, allowing him to craft an artwork that seamlessly integrates with its surroundings. His vision was to evoke anticipation and wonder, ensuring that Halo and the lobby’s architecture move in harmonious rhythm as visitors circulate through the space.

Inspiration and Symbolism

Gabriel drew inspiration from the rich history of the medical campus and its balanced evolution. This narrative is embodied in the structural steel cables and support brace that suspend Halo from the lobby’s ceiling, introducing intrigue and dynamism to the composition. As a universal symbol of hope, the circular form of Halo embraces the pure, timeless qualities of a circle— infinite, unyielding, and ethereal. This geometric simplicity resonates with the human spirit, offering a sense of upliftment and serenity.

Design and Illumination

Halo achieves its ethereal quality through a lightweight tensile fabric stretched over a sleek aluminum frame, creating a luminous centerpiece that captivates the eye. Integrated LEDs imbue the artwork with infinite color possibilities, allowing it to adapt to any occasion or event. This versatility makes Halo a vital element in enriching the experience of staff, patients, and guests within the medical center.

By thoughtfully intertwining art and architecture, Halo exemplifies how intentional design can create meaningful, impactful moments. It stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration, enhancing the lobby’s atmosphere and leaving a lasting impression on all who encounter it.
